The University of Waikato has six Research Institutes which are each offering a doctoral scholarship worth up to $85,000 and a masters scholarship worth $12,000.
The Research Institutes support world-class research in environmental science, demography and economic analysis, business and leadership, professional learning and development, education, and Māori and indigenous development. They fund programmes that span the length of the research pipeline from discovery to application and commercialisation. Sustainability in all its forms – environmental, economic, social and cultural – is a strong emerging theme across the Institutes.
The doctoral scholarships are worth up to $85,000 for three years. This includes tuition fees and scholarship instalments over the tenure. Awardees are required to study full-time.
The masters scholarships are open to domestic students only and are worth $12,000, which includes a fees component of $3,500. Awardees are required to study full-time.

Environmental Research Institute (ERI) Scholarships
ERI researchers investigate environmental issues across a range of ecosystems to support effective environmental outcomes. The doctoral and masters scholarship is designed to encourage environmental research into ERI’s major research themes: terrestrial ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems, coastal marine ecosystems, and Antarctic ecosystems.
Institute for Business Research (IBR) Scholarships
The Institute for Business Research (IBR) offers significant business and economic expertise pertaining to New Zealand and global business. It has research strengths in agribusiness, regional economics and corporate finance. The doctoral and masters scholarship is designed to encourage research that investigates the complex needs of contemporary New Zealand business and enhance its international connectedness.
National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA) Scholarships
NIDEA undertakes population research to help inform choices and responses to the demographic, social and economic interactions that are shaping New Zealand’s future. The doctoral and masters scholarship is designed to encourage research in line with the major research programmes of NIDEA.
Institute of Professional Learning (IPL) Scholarships
IPL provides high quality, research informed programmes of professional learning and development that contribute to improved professional practice in early childhood centres, kura, schools and tertiary institutions nationally and internationally. The doctoral and masters scholarship is focused on professional learning and development at any level. This may include leaders of organisations, individuals involved in teaching, developing school support networks and/or programmes of learning in kura, early childhood and school settings.
Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) Scholarships
Te Kotahi Research Institute (TKRI) is a University-wide entity to support, develop and promote research for and with iwi/Māori developed through the unified vision of Te Rōpū Manukura. The doctoral and masters scholarship is intended for students who show a link to at least one of the following themes; Economic Development and Intergenerational Sustainability, Environmental and Iwi Wellbeing, Solving Complex Social Challenges, Language and Cultural Identity, Leadership, Kaitiakitanga, Rangatiratanga.
Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER) Scholarships
WMIER aims to produce research that makes a difference and benefits the wider education sector. WMIER has an established programme of research that covers a range of areas related to curriculum, learning, teaching and assessment, education for Māori, e-learning and policy implementation that spans the early years, compulsory schooling and tertiary sectors.
