Call for applications for 11 Early Stage Researcher positions (PhD positions) in the NANOSTEM Initial Training Network (Marie Skłodowska-Curie-ITN)

NANOSTEM – New Nanomaterials for Neural Stem Cells Drug Delivery is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) offering joint research training projects leading to PhD.
NanoStem is a multidisciplinary and innovative project based on a holistic approach to address brain delivery and specifically, to target neurogenic niches. It brings advanced NP formulations containing drugs that were never tested in the context of the brain (e.g. CRISPR system), advanced screening of NP formulations in a human BBB model developed recently by the partners of the consortium, and in vivo testing of the formulations in the NSC. This project brings together academic and industrial teams with a very interdisciplinary expertise ranging from NP synthesis and characterisation, in vitro BBB models and BBB transport, NSCs, animal testing and clinical expertise.

The scientific aim of this network is to develop and characterise a selected set of advanced nanomaterials, and to study their suitability as novel drug delivery systems to target NSCs to induce their differentiation and mobilization to areas of disease. The project addresses current intersectorial barriers, fragmentation of efforts and lacking interdisciplinary skills – key essentials to achieve the scientific goals. The project will train a cohort of Early Stage Researchers in different scientific areas including: polymer chemistry and materials science, cell biology, pharmacology, neuroscience, nanobiotechnology and clinical sciences. The project will also provide a substantial training program in complementary skills, targeting both professional and personal development, and translation of research and entrepreneurship.
We invite applications for 3-year PhD fellowships to start on 1st September 2018 to work with one of the host organisations. Fellows will benefit from secondments in academia and industry, training and transferable-skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences. Successful candidates will be offered a salary plus mobility and family allowance (if applicable), in line with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Horizon 2020 requirements for Early Stage Researchers.
Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements: at the time of the recruitment by the host organisations, the candidates 1) must not have resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years, and 2) must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-Time Equivalent Research Experience is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate (either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited, even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged).

The NANOSTEM network is formed by 9 internationally recognised research institutions (see list below) and complemented by 5 partner organisations (Sanofi, HCS-Pharma, Brains for Brain, Saarland University and Instituto de Ciências Neares Aplicadas à Saude) who will contribute to the research training programme. Currently, 11 PhD positions are available in different areas as indicated in the list below. For each team, number of positions currently available, the general subject area, the name of PI and contact details are provided.
