We fund postgraduate candidates of exceptional research promise and develop researchers with a proven capacity for research.
The Strategic Research Framework 2015 – 2024 is our roadmap by which we deliver World – Leading Research with World – Changing Impact.
100% of Macquarie University’s Research has been evaluated as being world class or above through the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ratings.
For Session 1 2017 commencement Macquarie University is offering International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and International Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarships (iMQRES).
Applications are open to new international applicants and to currently enrolled international MPhil or PhD candidates.
The University also offers a limited number of scholarships to international Master of Research (MRes) candidates applying for an MRes/PhD ‘bundle’ (i.e. MRes Year 2 and 3-year PhD (1 plus 3 years)) through this competitive round.

What is an IPRS?

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) is a government-funded scholarship offered to international postgraduate students of exceptional research promise. The number of IPRS places available varies from year to year.

Value and tenure

The IPRS covers international tuition fees and compulsory health cover, for up to three years for a full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and for up to two years for a full-time Masters of Philosophy (MPhil).
In addition to the international tuition fees covered under the IPRS program, Macquarie University offers IPRS awardees a living allowance stipend, valued at $26,288 per annum tax exempt (2016 rate) which is paid as a fortnightly stipend.
Macquarie University usually supplements these scholarship places on offer with its own internally funded scheme, the Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES). The MQRES scheme is a Doctoral (PhD) scholarship program that aims to support exceptional research students.
Macquarie also offers a limited number of scholarships to international Master of Research (MRes) candidates applying for an MRes/PhD ‘bundle’ (i.e. MRes Year 2 and 3-year PhD) through the competitive IPRS round each year. For these successful awardees, the MRes Year 2 scholarship is funded by the University (International Research Training Pathway scheme (iRTP)). Candidates will be awarded a provisional PhD offer, and they will be considered for a 3 year PhD scholarship funded by the University on a competitive basis upon successful completion of their MRes Year 2. (Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES)).

Eligibility

Applicants must be citizens of countries other than Australia or New Zealand, and not Australian Permanent Residents.
IPRS applicants must be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a higher degree research program in Australia. Applicants who have commenced a higher degree research degree and terminated that enrolment within 6 months of commencement may still be eligible.
IPRS scholarships require applicants to be eligible for entry into a PhD or MPhil program. Candidates are expected to undertake full time, on-site candidature at Macquarie University. Read the eligibility requirements for PhD or the eligibility requirements for MPhil.
Successful applicants will usually have:

  • an outstanding academic record
  • a history of scholarships and prizes at the undergraduate level
  • and may have evidence of peer-reviewed research activity, such as publications and/or conference presentations.

While currently enrolled PhD and MPhil candidates are eligible to apply, any consumed prior enrolment will be counted as advanced standing and will reduce the maximum scholarship duration offered.
Applicants for admission to PhD, who are (counter) offered entry to MRes Year 2 with a provisional 3-year PhD and who rank competitively for IPRS scholarship, may be offered a scholarship to cover their MRes Year 2 tuition fees and a living stipend.
