University of Cambridge Ph.D. Scholarship in Mathematics

The University of Cambridge invites applications from international students for Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher (MSC-ESR) Fellowship in Mathematics to work with Professor Colm-cille Caulfield on turbulent mixing processes associated with the oceanic internal wave field.

Although based in Cambridge, the successful candidate will participate in several networking, training and outreach activities.

Project Description

The project will form part of an EC Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN): “Control, Prediction and Learning in Mixing Processes” (CoPeRMix). This ITN will fund 15 PhD projects to study various aspects of fluid mixing and unites 12 beneficiaries and eight partner organisations in the academic and industrial sectors from 7 countries across Europe: Belgium, France; Germany; Italy; Spain; Switzerland; as well as the United Kingdom. CoPeRMix aims:

  • To unravel the critical differences between stirring and mixing
  • To understand the subtle interplay between stirring, flow geometry and controls
  • To quantify the ultimate impact of mixing on flows
  • To extract insight into essential aspects of flow dynamics from the scalar field structure
  • The network is inherently multidisciplinary, bringing together fluid mechanics, geophysical and environmental science, chemical and biological engineering. There will be the opportunity to collaborate with different network members, mainly through an extended secondment to the research groups of Drs Patrice Meunier and Emmanuel Villermaux (lead PI of the ITN) at IRPHE Marseille.
  • All nationalities are eligible. Applicants must satisfy the EC’s eligibility requirements for MSC-ESR.
  • At the time of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months during the three years preceding the date of their engagement (short stays and vacations are not taken into account);
  • The researcher must not already have a PhD.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications is March 22, 2021

Eligibility Criteria

They should have (or expect to obtain) at least the equivalent of a UK upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in mathematics or other relevant scientific or engineering discipline.

Knowledge of fluid dynamics is required; expertise in geophysical fluid dynamics, numerical simulation, and machine learning application to fluid mechanics data sets would all be advantageous.

Award Information

  • The pay will comprise a living allowance of €44895.96 pa (converted to GBP) and a mobility allowance of €7200 pa.
  • An additional allowance of €3000 pa may be payable but is dependent on individual family circumstances.
  • The early-stage researcher position is offered in conjunction with a 36-month (fees-funded) PhD position, starting in October 2021, subject to the candidate satisfying the university’s admissions requirements for PhD study.
  • The successful candidate will be required to submit a PhD application to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

Application Process

Applications for the position, to arrive by 17.00 UTC Monday, March 22, should include a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts and the contact details for at least two academic referees, and should be sent by email (with the subject line: COPERMIX PhD Application) to [email protected].
