Welcome to the information page about the Rhodes Scholarship for Pakistan.
Each year, there is one Scholarship available in Pakistan to enable an outstanding student to study at the University of Oxford.
The first Rhodes Scholar from Pakistan took up residence in Oxford in 1951, and since that time more than 60 citizens of Pakistan have been awarded this prestigious scholarship.  They have pursued a variety of careers in public service, academia, business, law, and medicine, amongst others.  Many have achieved notable distinction, including:

• Professor Shaukat Hameed Khan, a nuclear-laser physicist who is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and was the rector of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI).
• Neurosurgeon Ayub K. Ommaya, the inventor of the Ommaya Reservoir, which is used to provide chemotherapy directly to the tumour site for brain tumours;
• Wasim Sajjad, who served as interim President of Pakistan on two occasions.  He serves in the Senate of Pakistan, where he has until recently been Opposition Leader in the Senate.

1. Closing date a. Your application must be submitted online (http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/pakistan) on or before 31 August 2016.
2. Eligibility criteria
3. You must have completed your undergraduate degree with First Class, or equivalent.
4. You must be a citizen of Pakistan, holding a Pakistani passport.
5. You must have undertaken formal study at an educational institution in Pakistan for a minimum of 4 of the last 10 years, and have either

(i) completed a school or college leaving exam (12th standard, A-level or equivalent) at a school or college in Pakistan, or
(ii) have received or would receive an undergraduate degree or mark-sheet establishing eligibility to receive an undergraduate degree at a university in Pakistan.

1. You must have reached your 19th and not have passed your 25th birthday on 1 October 2017, which means you must have been born after 30 September 1992 and on or before 1 October 1998

3. Please may apply online at http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/pakistan , which is the preferred means of application. Candidates who have difficulty submitting the application online may submit applications by registered post or courier providing delivery confirmation to the National Secretary after completing and printing the online application in full and attaching copies of all relevant documents. 1. The Selection Committee will invite candidates they wish to see to a personal interview. No candidate will be selected without a personal interview. The Selection Committee will typically meet in Lahore or Islamabad, on a date which will be notified to the candidates concerned. The granting of an interview is entirely within the discretion of the Committee and no candidate has the right to demand one. Travel expenses will be paid by the Rhodes Trust, covering the round trip cost of a First Class rail ticket, but 2 of 6 excluding hotel expenses. The committee regrets that it cannot fund international travel for those attending from overseas.
2. If a candidate has not received any communication by 1 December 2016, they must assume their application has been unsuccessful.
3. Information to be submitted with application

The documents and information listed below is required for submission and must be uploaded with your application (or submitted in printed form in case of applicants submitting physical applications). All documents must be in English. Please note that, if you are invited to interview, you will be asked to bring the originals of all documents with you.

1. A NADRA issued CNIC or passport issued by the Government of Pakistan.
2. A copy of Matriculation Result Sheet (or equivalent i.e. Ordinary Levels Statement of Result), Higher Secondary School Result Sheet (or equivalent i.e. Advanced Levels Statement of Result), Undergraduate Result Sheet, formally certified by the School, College or University.
3. Certified copies of course taken and degrees, honours and other academic distinctions obtained. All evidence must be formally certified by the Registrar, or other Responsible Officer, of the School, College or University.
4. CV/resume showing details of what you have achieved: any employment or enterprise you have undertaken during your studies or thereafter; your high school career and sports and extracurricular achievements; your college or university career and sports and extracurricular achievements; your involvement in student or community affairs, cultural and sporting activities; your leadership roles; and any other significant achievements or involvements. This should not exceed three pages of 12-point New Times Roman font.
5. A head and shoulder photograph (jpg).
6. A personal statement, completed in the candidate’s own handwriting in English, which should not exceed 1000 words, which should comprise the following:
7. Details of who you are, what you have achieved so far, what you wish to do at Oxford.
8. Your general interests and activities and what you plan to do with your life once you have completed your studies. In this statement you get a chance to discuss your aims and priorities and the contribution you have made and would like to make to society.

iii. Indicate the course of study and degree you wish to follow at Oxford.

1. Demonstrate that you are able to meet the requirements of the specific course you have chosen. Candidates are advised that it is a requirement of admission to all post-graduate, and some other courses, to submit samples of written work. The regulations concerning this can be found on the web pages of the University of Oxford: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/. Some courses also require successful completion of the GRE.
2. If you wish to undertake a DPhil must provide a brief outline of your proposed research and indicate one or more researchers under whom you would like to work in Oxford.

Your personal statement must be clearly signed by you and must state under your signature that it is your own work and that no external help was given in its creation. Your personal statement is a very important part of your application. It is essential that you have considered what course and degree you wish to follow at Oxford before you submit your application. It is a good idea 3 of 6 to discuss your proposed course of study with your professors or lecturers in that field, and, if possible, with someone who has knowledge of United Kingdom universities.

1. A list of four people (your referees) who can be contacted by the selection committee for further detailed information about you:
2. Furnish the business and home (or mobile) telephone and fax numbers as well as the postal and email addresses of all your referees.
3. Choose reliable people who are likely to respond to requests for written reports as their reports will be crucial to your application. Ask their permission before listing them as referees. Referees should be sent a copy of the Referee’s Request Letter at the bottom of this Memorandum.

iii. At least three of your referees should be academics who have taught you and who can comment on your academic ability and how well they think you would fare at Oxford.

1. Other referees should be persons who are able to comment critically on whether you fulfil the requirements Rhodes set out in his Will. A good referee is one who knows you well, rather than a wellknown person who only knows you superficially. It is not advisable to get close contemporaries or personal friends to be referees. h. Please do not upload certificates or testimonials other than those required.
2. Selection Procedure
3. The Rhodes Trust does not require any financial information from applicants, since selection for the Rhodes Scholarship is made without regard to financial means.
4. If you have dual citizenship, you may apply to one constituency only;
5. Selection for the Rhodes Scholarship is of course made without regard to marital status, race, ethnic origin, colour, gender, religion, sexual orientation, social background, disability, caste or other irrelevant distinction.
6. The Rhodes Scholarship for which you are applying is for entry to Oxford in October 2017 and may not be deferred.
7. The Rhodes Scholarship is confirmed only upon successful admission to the University of Oxford.
8. The decision of the Selection Committee is final.
9. Procedure after Selection
10. Please note that successful applicants will need to apply to the University of Oxford very soon after selection. Full details will be given upon selection.
11. The full application of successful candidates will be forwarded to Rhodes House, Oxford, where the Scholarship references will be used as appropriate in support of the candidate’s subsequent application to Oxford.
12. Applicants for a second undergraduate degree with senior status will need to submit a paper application, provided on selection, which must reach Oxford by Friday, 2 December 2016. Candidates must therefore make a quick submission immediately following election. 4 of 6
13. Successful candidates will be encouraged to disclose, in confidence, any medical condition or special needs which may require academic or personal support in Oxford.
