The Helmholtz Zentrum München in Munich, Germany, is a member of one of the leading research associations in Europe – the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. The aim of our research is to proactively detect health risks involving humans and the environment, decoding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and developing concepts for prevention and therapy.
The Research School ”Lung Biology and Disease” is an international, interdisciplinary, and structured MD and PhD training program, established at the Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC) in Munich, Germany, a translational lung research center and member of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). The Research School functions under the auspices of the Helmholtz Zentrum München – German Research Center for Environmental Health and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU), thereby providing an excellent and inspiring research environment. The Research School is designed to attract and promote outstanding and highly motivated MD, MD/PhD or PhD students from the basic and medical sciences by an internationally renowned faculty. Project D: Autoantibody dependent effector mechanisms in neutrophil-directed autoimmune diseases. Supervisor: Dieter Jenne
Project E: In depth analysis of pulmonary basement membrane composition and architecture. Supervisor: Herbert Schiller

Your Qualifications
The program is highly selective and invites applicants with a master´s degree (or equivalent) in any field of the lifesciences or medicine to commit to a career in translational medical research.

  • Proof of a master’s degree or a first professional qualification degree from a university in your home country. German applicants – or foreign applicants who studied at German universities – without a master’s degree, have to provide evidence of completion of a Diploma or ”Staatsexamen” in the above-mentioned disciplines.
  • Two letters of recommendation from instructors, advisors, or any other person qualified to evaluate your academic performance and potential for graduate training.
  • Information or certificates about English language skills, if your mother tongue is not English. Good knowledge of the English language is necessary for successful completion of the program. Desirable is:
  • An internationally recognized examination in English
  • A degree of an English-speaking school or university or
  • A longer stay abroad
